Life is precious. So precious that a ‘missing piece’ of its multi-coloured jigsaw is heart-breaking.
Sixty-five years ago, aged fifteen, I was a lonely, isolated, miserable, and uneducated ‘Northerner’ in a ‘Southern’ seaside resort. My formative years from six to fifteen were in Liverpool and my guttural scouse accent strong. Arriving in Southend, Essex, was not where I wanted to be, but it is where I found purpose, meaning, work, and my beautiful, wise, and faithful wife of sixty-one years, Ann.
It was here we began the first steps of a lifelong ‘nomadic’ journey that would take us abroad, through the darkest of days in the loss of two children, the adventures of twelve years Royal Air Force service, and a completely unexpected future. My education would be redeemed at thirty, and a complete change of direction lead us both into some of the most amazing, miraculous, and challenging life experiences and encounters.
I am an avid story-teller and it is those cameos of life that have prompted so many patient hearers, over the last twenty-five years, to close a conversation, ‘you should write a book’! In January 2023 I put pen to paper, or more accurately, fingers to computer.
